In addition to many ad-hoc opportunities for community service throughout the school year, KMS participates in certain ongoing programs that provide student-athletes with a deeper connection to the larger Killington community.
Killington Trailblazers
From early January through most of the third quarter, KMS student-athlete rotate shifts with the Killington Elementary School Trailblazers program. The Trailblazers program provides KES students with the opportunity to ski and ride at Killington each Thursday afternoon, and KMS student-athletes join with groups of elementary-school students. The KES students enjoy skiing with older kids, especially given the high level of skiing and riding prowess among KMS student-athletes.
Hasse Halley Trail
In memory of Dr. Hasse Halley, Killington Mountain School provides annual trail maintenance for the Hasse Halley Path off River Road in Killington. The full loop covers four miles, including portions of River Road; the trail itself is approximately two miles, largely on town land with 0.3 miles on national forest land. The school has also placed a bench, created from a converted chairlift and prepared by the KMS class of 2012, near the midpoint of the trail, overlooking the Ottaquechee River. The ongoing nature of the trail maintenance allows the KMS community to continue honoring the memory of Dr. Halley. |
